Do I need to be part of HDSB to participate?
Not at all! The Game Jam is open to all students, including those from HCDSB and beyond. Students from across Ontario are welcome to join. If you're outside of Ontario and would like to participate, feel free to contact us at 1khannameh2+HGJ@hdsb.ca.
Do I need prior experience to join?
No previous experience is required! This event is about learning, problem-solving, and time management. High-level game developers from Rosebud AI, along with other experts, will be available on our Discord channel to assist you throughout the event. We encourage you to learn as you go and test your skills!
Do I need to use a specific programming language or game engine?
No! Preferably, you should use Rosebud AI for the ease of use, sharing of the game via link, and especially those who are new to game development or are not at a stage to build a complete game in 52 hours. For the pro game-devs out there, you're permitted to use any programming language or game engine you prefer. As long as the game is playable in a web browser via Web Graphics Library (WebGL) or HTML5 and can be uploaded to Itch.io, it's acceptable.
Do I have to create everything from scratch (scripts, models, animations)?
No! You'll have access to Rosebud AI for creating custom AI-generated assets. You can also use free online assets, as long as you have the right to use them (copyright-free). We recommend checking out websites like itch.io, opengameart.org, and kenney.nl for free resources. Additionally, AI-generated assets are welcome, but make sure your game is entirely copyright-free!
